Friday night we had the pleasure of meeting up with Don and Grace Thompson for dinner. Don and Grace are Robbie Thompson's parents - one of Brant's best friends. The were in San Diego on vacation, and for Don to participate in the Vietnam Helicopter Pilot's Association reunion which was being held downtown this 4th of July weekend. We were fascinated with their journey...they got on the Amtrack in Arkadelphia, AR (a tiny town where Brant went to high school and college), and rode all the way out to San Diego. They are so adventurous! After meeting them in Old Town and taking them to our favorite restaurant, Casa Guadalajara, we took them on a quick tour of our neighborhood, then dropped them off for their next activity at their hotel.
Mimi and Papa were also in San Diego for the weekend, with Mimi making her debut back on her feet after her extensive surgery. Ellie was lucky enough to get to spend Saturday afternoon and night, as well as Sunday morning with them in their hotel...one of her favorite things to do. This girl LOVES staying in the hotel with Mimi and Papa! And why wouldn't she - they let her do as she pleases, which I'm almost positive includes jumping on the beds...
Brant and I enjoyed a date night on Saturday - we went out to dinner and actually got to talk to each other! We love taking Ellie everywhere with us, but it is quite nice to be able to enjoy time with each other once in a while. Sunday morning, we got up early and decided to celebrate the 4th of July at Iron Mountain in Poway to do a little hiking. Hiking is something we've always enjoyed doing but have a harder time now that Ellie isn't old enough to hike, but is too old to be worn in a backpack. What a fun hike! We really enjoyed the 6.63 out and back trail. It was difficult, but not too strenuous - just enough to get our heart rates up! Here are some views from the top - beautiful mountains in East San Diego county. You can see in the pictures that there was quite a marine layer on the coast, but we were far enough inland to be out from under the clouds!

After the hike, and getting Ellie back from Mimi and Papa, we headed to The Werner's house for pizza and brownies, before going over to the park to see lots of fireworks. San Diego does a fantastic fireworks show, and from our little neighborhood park, the one where we go to the free concerts, we could see 4 fireworks shows being shot off in Coronado and the downtown bay area. We've never gone to this park before to see the fireworks, but it is definitely the place to be! It was filled with families, young and old, and has such a great sense of neighborhood friendliness that makes us glad we chose to buy our house where we did.
Today, Monday, our is our last day off... Brant and I installed a ceiling fan in what is currently the toy room, but will become Ellie's bedroom sometime before the baby is born. We installed one of these exact fans in Ellie's room a couple of weeks ago, and thankfully this one went SO MUCH faster! You can see Ellie "helping" us in this photo...She drug all of her friends and her tent out to the living room, sat in the princess tent and watched a movie! That was probably the safest place for her anyway...

Here's what she's up to after her nap...making a "tent" out of her blankets and covering up all her stuffed animals... (she's under the blankets!)

What a great family weekend we've had...back to the grind tomorrow!
